Thou Shall Not

Perhaps you've heard of Stephen Colbert by now. For the uninitiated, he is a former correspondent from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart who now has his own show on Comedy Central. He achieved national fame for his scathing comedy routine at the White House Press Correspondents annual dinner, unapologetically bashing Bush in the president's presence and spawning the appreciation site www.thankyoustephencolbert.org. Perhaps his best line from that evening was, "People have likened the recent White House staff shake-ups as merely rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. But this administration is not sinking; this administration is soaring! If anything, it's more like rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenberg."

Last night, Colbert again made history. His best running series on his new show is called "Better Know A District." Colbert picks one of the 400+ House of Representatives districts to profile, culminating the segment with an interview with that district's representative. His most recent guest (er, victim) was a staunch conservative from Georgia, Mr. Lynn Westmoreland. Mr. Westmoreland is infamous as one of the 2 representatives who has never authored a piece of legislation in his entire tenure in the House. However, he has co-signed a bill that aims to require the public display of the Ten Commandments in the House and Senate chambers. During the interview, he said "I can't think of a better place than a public courthouse to hang the Ten Commandments." Colbert probed, "Congressman, you can't think of any better building in which to display the Commandments?" Without even thinking (perhaps about a CHURCH), the politician replied "nope." Colbert led on: "So these commandments are quite important to you, huh? OK, name them." Then came the shocked look on Westmoreland's face. "You want me to name them?" "Uh-huh," replied a stern-faced Colbert as he held up both of his fists to begin counting off on his fingers...

Westmoreland got THREE of the Commandments before admitting that he cannot name them all. Not only did he miss "Thou shall not kill," but he also failed to quote the Commandments properly. Even a "Godless liberal" (thanks, Ann Coulter) like me knows that all 10 commandments begin with the phrase "thou shall not." Westmoreland used the very sophisticated phrases "Don't lie," "Don't steal," and one other "don't" that was hard to hear on the video. Colbert closed the interview with a nail in the coffin: while shaking hands with Westmoreland, Colbert dead-panned "Congressman, thanks for taking time away from doing nothing to talk with us." It was awesome! The key parts of the video are available on www.ifilm.com/viralvideo.
