Don't Take Them Seriously!

Do you take Amnesty International seriously? You'd think that a human rights watchdog could get a few kudos on Memorial Day, when we remember and honor the war dead (many of whom died in torture-filled POW camps at the hands of merciless enemies). On the contrary! Dick Cheney got on Larry King Live today and admitted cooly that he doesn't take Amnesty seriously. Seriously (pardon the pun), this is what he said: "For Amnesty International to suggest that somehow the United States is a violator of human rights, I frankly just don't take them seriously." Well, Dick, with a name like "Dick" I can't really take you seriously either. It's very telling that in response to Amnesty's report condemning the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the administration has to resort to name-calling and hand-waving instead of proposing any evidence that might support fair treatment of detainees. If the United States was such an accomodating, peaceful country, shouldn't there be dozens of sophisticated arguments and examples for Cheney to point to, demonstrating the beneficence of the USA? Nah, let's resort to name calling instead. What pushovers.

The vice president also said he believes the insurgency in Iraq is "in the last throes." How many times will the American public be reassured that the insurgents are nearing their last gasp before people actually understand that we are being bull-shitted? Bush was trying to convince us during the October debates that the insurgency was winding down. We were told that following Saddam's capute a year ago, the "resistance" (as it was called then) would break down and wallow in the absence of a leader. I guarantee that come October, well over a year since the reassuring began, suicide bombers will still be wreaking havoc on Sadr City, Tikrit, Mosul, and all the other targets throughout Iraq. Well done, Mr. President.

This holiday weekend was invigorating, yet there is still much to be down around the house. I've come to the realization that the task of organizing a new home is going to take me all of my summer. Yippy! Not.
