Last Saturday of the Semester
My friends, this is the final Saturday afternoon of the academic semester. Classes end in 4 days, and then we'll be consumed by final exam studying until the real end of the semester. Some of us will be closing the book on the final chapter of our Rice careers... good times.
Last night while enjoying hamburgers by the Jones fountain, we heard a loud thud on the concrete path behind us. The noise was similar to what you would hear if a 5-pound bag of flour were tossed from a fourth floor window, and yet this was no sack of processed grain. Rather, it was a physically-challenged squirrel that fell from a tree and splatted upon the sidewalk. It clearly sustained multiple fractures, likely to its legs and back. It lay there for a few minutes, no doubt in agony, before attempting to walk. "Walking" turned out to be "slithering," and this severely injured squirrel writhed its way off the path and under the shade of a nearby bush. We left it there to die in peace. However, it resurfaced at breakfast this morning, crawling around the sidewalk again. A friend called the local animal hospital, and we hope someone is going to take care of it (translation: put it out of its misery).
Anyone at Rice who hasn't read this week's edition of the Thresher needs to check out Evan Mintz's opinion piece on page 3. This kid is my hero. He's only a freshman, but he has the balls to publish a full piece on the evils of Rice for Life, the militant anti-abortion group on campus. Their advertising campaign has been quite aggressive, to say the least. Mintz steps up to the plate and flat-out labels them a hate group. Rock on! I can't wait for the angry, Jesus-enthused letters to the editor that will undoubtedly flood the pages of next week's Thresher. I say, "Bring 'em on... fuckers."
As if inspired by Mintz, we rented Saved last night and had a blast watching the lives of a bunch of preachy, ultra-conservative Christian high school girls go to hell. Hey, if it's tough to be a liberal in reality these days, at least we can have our hey-day in opinion pages and through movies!
I have 3 hours to study P-Chem and Development prior to the Concert of the Century tonight. My freshman year roommate is a music composition major, and the orchestra will be performing 4 of his pieces tonight. That's right folks, you heard it here first: the next John Williams/Andrew Lloyd Webber will be strutting his stuff TONIGHT. Be there or be square.
Music of the Moment: "Vietnow" by Rage Against the Machine
P.S. I wrote this entire journal twice because it didn't publish right the first time. Man, the things I do to keep my readers happy...
