Final Weekend of the Semester
This is it, friends. Here we are enjoying the final Saturday afternoon of the academic semester. Classes will end on Thursday, and then final exams will consume us. At that point, some of us will be finished with our Rice careers. Hard to believe...
Last night while enjoying a hamburger dinner at the Jones fountain, we heard a huge thud on the concrete path behind us. The noise was similar to that you would hear if a 5-pound sack of flour were thrown from a fourth story window. Unfortunately, this was no sack of flour. Rather, it was a squirrel that had fallen from a tree and splatted on the sidewalk. It clearly sustained some major fractures, likely to its legs and back. It couldn't walk, but every few minutes it would "slither" like a snake, writhing its way forward along the concrete. After about 15 minutes, it made its way under a bush and we decided it would pass on peacefully from there. However, it resurfaced at breakfast this morning, crawling its way across the concrete surrounding the fountain. A friend call a local animal hospital and I hope they are able to deal with this tragedy (read: put it out of its misery).
Anyone at Rice with access to a copy of this week's Thresher should really read Evan Mintz's article on Rice for Life, the anti-abortion group on campus. Not only is the article well-written and hilarious, but he actually calls Rice for Life a hate group! Three cheers to Evan Mintz, who's clearly got the balls to stand up to those losers. Pipe bombers don't own our campus!
As if inspired by Mintz, we rented the movie Saved last night and watched in glee as a bunch of ultra-conservative Christians had their lives go to shit. That movie has one of my favorite quotes in regards to the religion quandry: "If God wants us all to be the same, then we did he make us so different?" Amen.
My freshman year roommate is a music composition major, and his masterpiece concert is premiering tonight. Thus, I have 3 hours to study P-Chem and Development prior to the jamfest, so I'm going to get down to business.
