Q: How many legislative authorities will meddle in the personal affairs of a vegetable using taxpayer dollars, all the while neglecting things like healthcare, social security, foreign policy, etc. ?
A: At least 6: National House, National Senate, Florida House, Florida Senate, Governor of Florida, President of USA
Q: How many times has any single judge ruled in favor of Terri Schiavo's parents?
A: Zero
Shocked? I'm not. This is classic Republican bullshit. Our nation's public servants have WAY overstepped their boundaries on this one, and I hope they will pay dearly for it. The geriatric population is growing rapidly as the Baby Boomers age, and old people do not want to lose their right to direct the circumstances of their own deaths. I'd wager that 9 in 10 elderly Americans do not want the government deciding when they can or cannot have their feeding tube removed.
Isn't it amazing that the Republican argument has always been for small, unobtrusive government, yet the Republicans do the most to meddle in the personal lives of Americans? Republicans have always tried to legislate their beliefs, morals, and patriotism upon the masses, and now they are openly trying to control someone's life. This is ridiculous. The Democrats should be pouncing on these Republican scoundrels, and this should become a major issue in the 2006 midterm elections. Republican party leaders are such frickin' hypocrits: "we don't support welfare for poor people, but rich vegetables should be kept alive on machines and tubes for 15+ years." My only question is: how do you scumbags plan to pay for every vegetable to be artificially kept alive indefinitely?
For the sake of whatever dignity Terri Schiavo has left, I pray that she passes away calmly and quickly. To continue this tit-for-tat game of "feeding tube in, feeding tube" out is cruel and shameful. This woman had a life, and she deserves a dignified death. Is this not the perfect example of a case in which a lethal dose of drugs is warranted? As it stands, she will die of dehydration and starvation, a painful process that will last up to 2 weeks. Her mucus membranes will dry out and crack, her throat will become parched, her eyes will dry, her internal organs will shrivel, and the life will be slowly squeezed from her. This is sickening. Death row inmates receive infinitely better deaths. What is wrong with this country?
