A 5-Minute Post
This is going to be a quick post to satisfy the cravings of all my eager readers.
1. The Eagles tore my heart out on Sunday. My emotions were a literal rollercoaster, as the Broncos built a stunning 28-0 lead, the Eagles closed to 28-21 and threatened to match the largest comeback ever, and finally the Broncos pulled away to dominate by a final score of 49-21. This team better get its offense (and defense) together... FAST.
2. Sunday's foray into the world of Lakewood Church was a disaster. We wanted to place fliers on car windshields advocating a "no" vote on Proposition 2 in the upcoming elections, which would ban gay marriage by constitutional amendment in Texas (incidentally, the amendment is so poorly worded that it actually bans all forms of marriage, gay and straight alike). After tagging about 7 cars, an unmarked security car approached us and stated that we required permission to distribute literature. We were also warned (I question whether this is true) that 2 people were arrested last week for handing out fliers in the public parking garages. Our volunteerism cut short, we had no choice but to head inside the mega-church for what turned out to be a stunningly awkward 2 hour service. The lights, full stage band, and jubilant crowd had the Compaq Center rocking during the opening 4-5 "hymns," which were more like a Christian rock concert on steroids. The following service was torturously long and feeble-minded, with a zillion contradictory references to ignorance, money, and simplicity (not to mention a parcity of actual Biblical content). If you are really interested in getting a sneak peak inside evangelical America, you have to go here for a service. One is all you'll (ever) need.
3. In 11 hours, I will be observing a laproscopic "tour" of the abdominal anatomy of an unembalmed cadaver in the front of our BCM classroom. It is possible that as I write this journal, tomorrow's demonstration is enjoying his/her final hours amongst the living. A very freaky thought that will not be carried further in this forum.
