TORCHES
Today was filled with infectious disease notecards. I purchased a stack of professionally made notecards at the beginning of our infectious disease module last block. It has a small textbook's worth of information, as the notes are about 8x6 with size 8 single-spaced font on both sides. There is one card per organism, and the set includes bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and worms. There are probably about 200 cards in all. This afternoon and evening I painstakingly went through the fungi, viruses, and protozoa. It took hours, and I will have to make multiple passes through this material to actually commit all of it to memory, but I feel as though I'm off to a good start. I'll share a tidbit of information with anyone who's interested: TORCHES is the acronym for (some of the) infections that can cross the placenta of a pregnant woman and infect her fetus: TOxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), HErpes/HIV, and Syphilis. Yummy!
ESPN had a disturbing feature on tonight's Sportscenter regarding blatant racism in European soccer. Apparently, fascist fans chant "monkey" at African players and throw bananas and peanuts onto the field. The fans also wave Nazi flags and remove their shirts to reveal fascist tatoos on their arms and chests. Some fans openly make the fascist salute Hitler-style, and at least one player has returned their salute on live television (see image below). The coach of the Spanish national team that will be competing in the World Cup was also captured on video telling his players during a practice that they should be motivated to prove they are better than the "black piece of sh*t" who is the star player on the French team. FIFA, soccer's international governing body, has warned that any team personnel exhibiting racism in this year's World Cup (which begins Friday) will result in a loss of 3 points for their team in the standings (equal to one victory). However, the penalty does not apply to unruly and racist fans, which kinda defeats the point.
